Last year my husband had discovered a new place in Mount Union to hike. We didn't actually make it there until a few weekends ago. We just got new hiking boots for a trip to Glacier National Park later this summer and decided that this would be the perfect opportunity to hike somewhere new and start breaking in the boots! At 5am we made our coffee, packed up our car, and headed to 1,000 Steps to hike the old rock quarry. The hike begins with none other than approximately 1,003 stone steps. There weren't too many other people on the trail this early, but those who were all had a common bond, sharing with each other that these steps were showing everyone how much we haven't worked out lately! We eventually made it to the top and decided to set up a hammock at a point overlooking the woods and mountains. After literally hanging out here for about an hour, we continued to hike for about 7 more miles through the moss covered trails and winding forests and overlooks.
We made it to the quarry overlook and decided to make our way back down. There were many more people out at this time of day. We made it the whole way through the woods and to the top of the stone stairway yet again, only down was much more difficult than climbing up! At the very top of the stairs, a natural spring runs down and over the last set of stairs (or first if you're on your way down). Coming up the wet stairs, not so slippery, coming down is a whole different story. The proof being my bruised tailbone. Despite the unfortunate start to our way down the stairs, this hike was amazing! We've never hiked a trail like this before and we'll definitely be returning soon!
Here are some shots from our adventures on the trail.
